Frequently Asked questions about Skin Packaging

What is Skin Packaging?

Skin packaging is a process where a heated, flexible film is drawn tightly around a product and seals it to a backing board that has been treated with adhesive. This creates a secure, tamper-resistant package that clearly displays the product while keeping it firmly in place.

Skin packaging costs vary based on factors like finished card size, volume, materials, and whether you already have equipment. For many applications, it’s a cost effective option because it uses minimal materials and reduces the need for custom tooling.  As a ballpark estimate, A 6″ X 8″ .024″ Card printed 2 colors using .005 film would cost around $0.40ea for materials.

Skin packaging uses a flexible film that conforms directly to the product, while blister packaging relies on a rigid, preformed plastic cavity that seals to the face of the card. Skin packaging typically offers better product stability and more flexibility for short or medium production runs. Blister Packaging is more cost effective for large runs of singular items and offers better print quality.

The product is placed on a backing board, a frame with heated film is lowered over it, and a vacuum pulls the film tightly around the product.  The heated plastic melts an adhesive which bonds the components together. Once cooled, the film seals to the board, creating a durable and visually appealing package.

When done correctly, skin packaging will not damage your product at all. The film molds around the item without excessive pressure, and temperatures are controlled to protect both the product and its finish.
